Michael Kifer Workshop
Friday & Saturday, April 28 & 29, 2017
Join us as we welcome ceramic artist Michael Kifer to the Michigan Art Center! Michael will be here Friday evening, 4/28, to meet and mingle with workshop attendees, and will be doing an all-day workshop on Saturday, 4/29. Watch as Michael demonstrates hand building techniques in the morning session using slabs and everyday available forms, press molds, and texture to make parts for a teapot. After lunch, Michael will decorate using airbrushing techniques and assemble the pieces to create beautiful, one-of-a-kind teapots.
Michael attended Kellogg Community College and received an Associates degree in Art. He then apprenticed with Frank A. Colson in Sarasota, FL and learned how to manage a clay studio which greatly helped him throughout his career. He began creating functional stoneware with a subdued glaze palate. Several years later, after attending Penland School of Craft and working with Steve Howell, his eyes were opened to a more "painterly" approach by using underglazes to decorate the surface of his work. Michael's work has evolved to also include textured surfaces for which he has received Best in Category and Best in Show at several nationally recognized shows.
Refreshments will be served Friday evening, 4/28, from 6p-8p.
Workshop on Saturday 4/29 runs from 10am to 5pm. Lunch will be provided.
